Customised Lubrication System

HydX is one of our key suppliers, and for us it has been crucial that they can manage manufacturing, packaging, and logistics, as well as ensure delivery of all lubrication systems (Lube Units) for synchronous condensers from Ystad, via Gothenburg, all the way to our customer in the United States.

HydX with a Key Role in a Prestigious Future-Oriented Project

The Texas-based company VoltaGrid develops power generation solutions with a strong focus on securing a stable and reliable electricity supply. In connection with several new AI infrastructure projects currently being developedacross the United States, ABB has received a significant order for the delivery of grid-stabilisation equipment. The extensive project is linked to energy supply for large-scale AI data centres in the U.S.

As the AI industry continues to grow rapidly, electricity consumption in data centres is expected to double by 2030, placing entirely new demands on stable, reliable, and fast-responding energy infrastructure.

To meet these requirements, ABB has engaged HydX as a key supplier in the project. HydX is responsible for the manufacturing and delivery of critical components that enable grid stabilisation in some of the world’s most demandingdata centre installations.

Historic Order to the United States

Over a period of two and a half years, ABB Sweden, in close collaboration with HydX, will deliver, among other equipment, 27 synchronous condensers to the Texas-based energy company VoltaGrid in the United States. VoltaGridspecialises in power generation solutions for advanced infrastructure supporting the rapidly expanding AI industry.

The order is a direct response to the need to rapidly establish a stable energy supply for several new AI infrastructure projects in the U.S. The data centres being built impose extremely high demands on operational reliability, and the installed system is estimated to have an electricity consumption equivalent to that of two nuclear power plants.

“Synchronous condensers may resemble large motors or generators in design, but their true purpose and strength lie in supporting the power grid. As data centres continue to grow, these machines are once again becomingincreasingly important due to their ability to provide inertia and short-circuit power. They help VoltaGrid ensure reliable and resilient microgrids.”

An Invaluable Combination of Manufacturing, Packaging, and Logistics

HydX has collaborated with ABB Sweden for many years across a wide range of projects. Within the scope of this project, HydX is manufacturing 27 lube units for flywheel-equipped synchronous condensers. These systems are deliveredto ABB and form a central part of a complete solution comprising prefabricated eHouse units, with power control, automation, and excitation systems fully integrated.

Manufacturing takes place at HydX’s facility in Ystad. ABB then conducts factory acceptance testing on site, after which any necessary adjustments are made. Once the units are approved, HydX is responsible for packaging, logisticshandling, and transportation to the Port of Gothenburg for onward shipment to the United States.

“For us, it is crucial that HydX, as a subcontractor, can manufacture, package, and manage the logistics for these units— capabilities we would not have been able to handle in Västerås. While this was not a requirement in the original specification, it has proven invaluable and has significantly simplified the entire process. As a result, we have now updated the requirement specification for the future.”

Meeting Extremely High Reliability Requirements

Since its founding in 2009, HydX has maintained a clear focus on technical expertise, quality, reliability, and service—factors that are critical in projects where operational reliability is non-negotiable.

The project timeline extends through mid-2027. The first units are expected to be commissioned during the spring and summer of 2026, and the project is progressing according to plan.

“ Our customer places enormous demands on reliability—it is the first and second priority on the list. After that come delivery times and cost. We have worked with HydX before and know that they are a dependable partner who puts our customers first, delivers high-quality support, and remains flexible as requirements evolve.”
